A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is crucial for several financial and tax-related tasks in India. Here’s a simple guide to help you activate and update your PAN card details.

1. Check the Status of Your PAN Card

Before proceeding with activation or update, verify the status of your PAN card:

  • Visit the official e-Filing website.
  • Under the “Quick Links” section, select the option “Verify PAN Status.”
  • Enter your PAN number, full name, date of birth, and mobile number.
  • Hit “Continue” to receive an OTP on your registered mobile.
  • Enter the OTP and click on “Validate.”

If your status shows “PAN is Active and Details are Available,” your PAN is ready to use. However, if it says “PAN is Active but Details are Not Available,” you’ll need to update it before proceeding.

2. Updating Your PAN Details

To update your outdated PAN details, follow these steps:

  • Go to the NSDL PAN Update page.
  • Select the “PAN Change Request Form.”
  • Fill in your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and date of birth.
  • Agree to the terms and click “Submit.”
  • Complete the e-KYC by entering the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Review and confirm the details, then pay the required fee.

Once completed, you will receive an acknowledgment number. The update process takes around 10-15 business days.

3. How to Reactivate a Deactivated PAN Card

If your PAN card has been deactivated, follow these steps to reactivate it:

  • Send a letter to your Assessing Officer (AO) requesting reactivation.
  • Attach a self-attested copy of your deactivated PAN card.
  • Include an indemnity bond addressed to the Income Tax Department.
  • Submit these documents to your local Income Tax Department office.

Reactivation usually takes around 10-15 business days.

4. Ordering a New Physical PAN Card

Once your PAN card is updated or reactivated, you can order a new physical card:

  • Visit the Protean eGov Technologies website.
  • Choose “Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data.”
  • Fill in the required information and make the payment.
  • The physical PAN card will be sent to your registered address.

Ensure your address details are correct to avoid delivery issues.

Important Notes:

  • Make sure your PAN is linked with Aadhaar for easy updates.
  • Keep your contact details updated to receive OTPs and alerts.
  • For any issues, you can contact the Income Tax Department’s helpline.

By following these steps, you will be able to activate, update, and receive a physical PAN card, ensuring you can continue your financial tasks without any interruptions.
